“Poor William” wants to know what happened to his good friend, Hans Umber. Hans used to work for William in New Orleans, but all of a sudden he left town in search of fame and riches. According to Poor William, Hans threw away a perfectly good career as a carpenter because he wanted to paint landscapes. Furthermore, a third person has come to New Orleans looking for Hans.

In the Colorado Rocky Mountain backcountry, two hikers venture out for a short walk to a place called Slatetop Mountain. For Lewis and Marisa, events do not pan out like they planned, as the daylight excursion turns into an unforgettable night.
